Internet at Home in Nairobi

I need a good, always online unlimited data, Internet connection at home and I do not want to pay more than KES 4,000 per month (USD $50).

Currently I am using the Safaricom Broadband Modem (Huawei E220). I bought the device for KES 2,000 and I purchase pre-pay bundles of data. The speed of the Internet connection varies between 0.5 and 0.9 MB/s.

My options are;

Safaricom High Speed Broadband Internet;
  • Technology - WiMax (the connection is shared on a ration of 1:8)
  • Speed - 512 Kbps, 1 Mbps and 2Mbps (the 512 Kbps bandwidth option is currently not available as Safaricom are reviewing this package.).
  • Monthly cost - KES 3,999, KES 5,999 and KES 6,999 (inclusive of VAT).
  • The equipment and installation are free upon subscription but there is a refundable deposit required of 50% of the monthly fee. Safaricom require that you sign up to a contract of 12 months.

Zuku Home Internet;
  • Technology - Fibre optic cable to the house (the connections is shared with other users).
  • Speed - 1 Mbps, 4 Mbps and 8 Mbps
  • Monthly cost - KES 999, KES 1,999 and KES 3,499 (inclusive of VAT).
  • The equipment is free but there is an installation fee of KES 2,999. Wananchi (zuku) require that you sign up for a contract of 12 months. Installation will be done in 7 - 14 working days after payment (installation and the first months cost) is received.
The other possibilities are AccessKenya home Internet service and the Zuku WiMax service.

I am in touch with Safaricom and Zuku and hope to decide soon on which service I will sign up with. I am interested to see how it will compare with the Internet (I had) at home in NC, USA.
