The loss of the contact information stored on your phone, either through the loss or damage of a mobile phone can be very frustrating.
You need not lose your phone to suffer this inconvenience. Most people switching phones, following an upgrade, will need to reenter all their contact data if it is not stored on the SIM card.
Even though the gathering and reentering of phone contact data is inefficient and time consuming. Very few people backup their phone contact information.
Android phones have simplified the management of contact data by linking them to the Contacts in your Google Account. This eliminates the risk of losing phone contacts and reduces the need to do a backup, but it is always wise to do so.
All your contacts (name, phone number, email address, etc.) are stored in the Google 'cloud' and accessed by the Android phone, and other devices, from the cloud. Once you setup the sync function all your contact data in your Google account is displayed on your Android phone. Updates on the phone are instantaneously updated in your Google contacts.
It took me less than 15 minutes to switch from the Android IDEOS U8150 to the IDEOS X5 and all my contact information was immediately available on my new phone. Very efficient and productive!
For those that fear that Google is evil there is the obvious downside of further loss of privacy.
Please note that organizations with server based services like Microsoft Outlook or BlackBerry have been using similar services at premium rates. Google have made it available for the masses; free for all that purchase Android phones.
