The year 2010 is almost over and I am reflecting on the year that was. I was in the USA for just over half the year; a portion of my self-exile there from Nov 2008 to July 2010. I am thrilled to be back home in Kenya and have been musing about what I miss.
I definitely do not miss the winter weather; having to shovel snow from the driveway before leaving for work in the morning!
This is what I miss;
- Internet at home in North Carolina; a reliable 3 Mbps/384 Kbps connection from AT&T via ADSL.
- Red Box; DVD rentals from a vending machine at the super markets. $1 USD per night for the latest releases!
- Pandora; listening to the awesome collection of music for free! Actually that is 40 hours free each one month! This is service is not available from Kenya "... due to licensing constraints ..."
- Mail delivered to the front door of the house! The combination of the mail delivery service and online purchasing through websites is bliss!
- Great free playgrounds for the kids and parks for the whole family!
- Watching TV online, especially football and technology shows like CNET and Doctype. During the World Cup ESPN were streaming games through AT&T Internet connections.
- The public and university library that had a great collection of books!
- The public school that my daughters attended! Great dedicated teachers! I have to confess that we lived in a small relatively affluent town.
- Walmart and other clothing stores where I could get decent clothes at a modest price.
- Being able to buy a second hand 2007 Grand Caravan for approximately $10,000.
- Last but not least the friends I met ...
