Why Do You Want A Website?

The world wide web (WWW) provides amazing opportunities for individuals and small and medium size firms that in the past were disadvantaged when marketing their products or services in comparison to large firms with huge marketing and sales budgets.

In the past the options for letting people know you exist and can offer a great service or product were primarily TV or radio advertising, newspaper or magazine ads, and the telephone directory.

A good website can enable you to spend less than you would have using traditional marketing and service delivery methods if you are willing to invest in an effective and good strategy.

This is dependent on being very clear on what you want from the website. The next critical thing is to determine who your audience is. Only then should you start designing and building your website.

A good website is in many ways a marathon not a sprint. To ensure success you need to have a long term plan and then pace yourself. No one else can answer the fundamental questions; Why should you get a website? How simple or complex should it be? and above all What is a reasonable amount to pay for the website?

Most web designers will rejoice at the news of a potential client because their goal is to make many websites and increase their revenue, reduce their costs so that they can increase their profit. They will try to upsell you to their most expensive offer. So unless you have a huge budget there is no way they can develop the basic framework on why a website and for who. They would need to spend a significant amount of time to understand you and your business.

That said a good web designer should ask these questions and assist you develop a long term plan but you will need to spend time thinking why you want a website and develop the basic plan.
