In the previous blog post titled ‘Mazda Demio Expenses Nairobi’ I provided an overview of the purchase and initial two years running costs for a second hand 1,290 cc Mazda Demio (2011). This blog post provides the breakdown of the running costs for the third year, Sep 2020 to Aug 2021. I rarely have more than 2 passengers for the majority of my trips, so this small car works very well for me. I am glad to own a car that costs relatively little to maintain and conveniently gets me around Nairobi.
Depreciation
The assessed value in late August 2021 was KES 520,000, down from KES 580,000 in August 2020. It has depreciated by KES 60,000 (10.35%).

Distance Driven
I have driven approximately 6,350 KM in the past 12 months, an average of 529 KM a month. This is significantly more than I drove in the first two years, primarily due to longer distances covered for the school runs for my daughters.

Total Expenses
KES 116,583 spent between September 2020 and August 2021, for fuel, service, parking and insurance. This works out to KES 9,715.25 a month.
Parking - KES 3,970
Most malls charge for parking and that is where I shop, bank and visit the barber or doctor. I make these payments mainly through three pre-paid parking cards (KAPS, Park N Go and Paytech). The other payments, cash or M-Pesa, are to Park N Go Yaya which annoyingly does not accept the Park N Go card.
Car Wash - KES 7,850
I get the car washed approximately twice a month. Still surprised that it adds up to this tidy sum but very happy with the service I get from the gentleman that cleans it.
Service - KES 20,412
This includes two scheduled services at the garage I have been taking my cars to for almost 21 years. I have also added oil once. I have neglected to do wheel alignment and balancing and will do so soon.
Insurance - KES 23,405
For the annual payment made in Sep 2020. Simple plan with this is to pay for the cheapest cover from a reliable company and pray that it will not be required.
Fuel - KES 60,946
I still mainly buy fuel from one of two Shell stations near where I live. The average amount spent each month on fuel is KES 5,078, a huge increase from the average of KES 2,942 per month for the first two years. I attribute the increase to more kilometers driven, higher fuel prices and more use of Shell V Power fuel!
