Application software (app) is 'computer software designed to help the user to perform specific tasks'. It is one of the coolest features of smart phones.
I have been using an Android phone for the past 4 months; initially the basic IDEOS U8150 and then the IDEOS X5. There is a link to the Android Market on my phone, where I download free or buy apps and then install them.
These are my favourite Android Apps;
- Angry Birds Rio - Awesome game, keeps my daughters entertained (free);
- Dictionary.com - Great dictionary (free);
- Documents To Go - For viewing Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Still using the free trial option that was pre-installed in the phone and have not registered (free);
- Fantasy Football Buddy - Great for managing and staying up to date with the Fantasy Premier League when I am on the move (UK£1.39 or KES 180.72);
- Gmail - Email (free);
- Google Docs - Creating, editing, uploading and sharing documents (free);
- Google Maps - Great maps and navigation tool (free);
- Google Search - Easiest way to search the web and phone (free);
- Karl's Mortgage Calculator - Great mortgage calculator with graphs and charts, for the moments of insanity when I contemplate buying a house (free);
- Kindle - Awesome app for reading my Kindle books when I have not carried my Kindle (free);
- NIV Bible - Easier to navigate, than the web based Biblegateway with poor Internet, when the preacher asks me to read a passage for everyone in the congregation (US$5.99 or KES 502.03);
- Opera Mini Web Browser - Fast and efficient web browser (free);
- Pocket Casts - Fantastic app for audio and video, 'Podcast listening finally made easier'. The weekly 'Word on the Street' by Sesame Street has become a family favourite. I also live NPR Planet Money. (AU$2.70);
- SoundHound - Identifies songs playing in seconds, incredible app! (free);
- Twitter - official twitter app for Android (free);
- UEFA.com full edition - official UEFA app for European football including UEFA EURO 2012, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League (free);
- World Clock & Widget - Helps me stay know the time around the world so that I do not call my sister or boss at the wrong time (free);
- YouTube - still cannot get over that I can watch video so seamlessly on a mobile phone (free).
Notable mention for the Official Rugby World Cup 2011 app for the live match commentary and video highlights of the games. The half-time and full-time highlights for all the matches were available minutes after the half or game respectively. It was so much fun to follow the rugby world cup in New Zealand using this app.
