A smartphone, no cellular network and great a WiFi Internet connection

For most of last week I had no access to a cellular network. I was attending meetings at a retreat center in North Carolina, which has no cellular network other than at one or two places at high elevation. (I am not complaining, because I hear the Safaricom roaming fees are horrific!)

There was great Internet connection via WiFi network and I made the most of this using my Nokia E72 (smart)phone. A first for me.

I was impressed by how many things I could do using a phone and a good WiFi Internet connection;
  • FM Radio - To listen to when I kept waking up at 4.00am in a room without a TV.
  • Internet Radio (listened to Capital FM, Jazz24 and West FM)
  • Twitter (via Gravity)
  • Email (via Mail for Exchange and Gmail)
  • Web browsing - primarily to follow the BBC live text of the Arsenal v Barcelona Champions League football (soccer for our lost friends in the USA) game which was in the middle of the afternoon on the Eastern time zone in the USA :(
  • Clock  - I found out the Nokia E72 has feature to input another time zone to assist my confused body struggling to adjust to EST in the USA!
  • Alarm - To help me wake up after falling back to sleep at 6.00am
  • Notes - To take notes during the meetings!
  • Calendar - For reminders and make note of meetings I was required to attend.
  • Camera - 5.0 MPix (take pictures of cool and weird things and send them via twitpic)
